Week Five: Analyzing Interviews

  • 1.  Week Five: Analyzing Interviews

    Posted 05-09-2022 08:59 AM

Welcome to Week Five of our masterclass! This week we're covering how to analyze the interviews you've conducted, how to find common themes, and how to use an affinity diagram.

Here's this week's video that explains the learning objectives and provides a guide for how to analyze your interviews:

In regards to affinity diagrams, I really like this tool not just for analyzing in-depth interviews, but also for brainstorming sessions and other types of research. Here are a few articles that explain affinity diagrams and their benefits:

Attached below are three interview transcripts based on our ongoing case study company, Techie Co. Your assignment this week is to review the transcripts and perform some analysis, using the method I explain in the video. The slides I use in the video are also attached.

As always, the assignment is due in a week, specifically Monday, May 16 at 12:00 PM Pacific.  Be sure to also review and comment on at least one other member's analysis.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I hope you like practicing these analysis skills!

    Best,

    Chad

    Hi All,

I have attached the Affinity Diagram excel analysis I performed on the three transcripts.  I did a Theme Summary two ways, once on the number of times a theme got mentioned by an interviewee and once on the total number of times a Theme was mentioned by all interviewees.  The results were the same for the first 5 Themes, but varied after that.

Let me know what you think.

Hi, James: I like how you looked at the data two different ways. It really helps to surface which themes have the highest number of recurrences. Great job!

    Hi James,

I appreciate how you've been able to call out the subtle differences across themes and break them down even further in your analysis - for example how you've differentiated 'referencable and trustworthy' from 'personal, local, experienced service'. Great work!

Really nice work James! I am inspired. I am finishing the transcript captures still for Transcript 3 but took the same approach to drill down by interviewee and then plan to roll up the themes into 1 high level sheet. I really like your approach - clean, easy to follow and easy to get insights from so very helpful in meeting your objectives with this project.

James - Very thorough and great work. I liked the way you combed through each interviewee and summed it up.

Hello, everyone: I wanted to try using Miro's affinity diagram to see if I could present information in a different way. I've attached my attempt to group ideas from the three example interview transcripts about how each interviewee perceives Techie Co. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

    Tiff,

"A picture is worth a thousand words" - interesting to see this laid out this way, great visual.  I have done Affinity diagraming in person but never virtually, this Miro program looks like it would work well for virtual sessions, I will have to check this out.

    Thanks,
    James

    Hi Tiff,

Although I've used Miro in the past and I consider myself a visual person, I tend to get lost across the multitude of sticky notes and how to get specific output from them. I like your approach of assigning values underneath the categories to get substantive output from the visuals.

This is so great, Tiff! Seeing it visually like that really makes it really clear what was important to each person interviewed, and I could see that being helpful next time you are working on personas too. Thanks for sharing this interesting use of Miro!
