Focus Action Plan: Opportunity Scoring

By Georgina Donahue posted 07-12-2024 10:09 AM

You are making great progress applying your Focus knowledge! Your next step is to further focus your ideas and decide which to prioritize.

You will use the Opportunity Scoring Table to identify which to pursue.

It’s a systematic and quantifiable method that scores opportunities against four attributes:

  • Investment Required: How many resources will it take to bring this opportunity to fruition?

Steps to conduct the scoring exercise effectively:

  1. Assemble a small team of up to six product managers or owners.

  1. Discuss and define the four attributes, assigning weights based on their importance to your organization, before you open the tool.

  1. Move the Opportunity Scoring Table to a shared digital workspace to allow concurrent edits and input.Your peers use Mural, Miro or Figjam

  1. Collaboratively score each opportunity against the attributes to quantify their potential.

You will produce a ranked list of opportunities, highlighting those with the highest potential. This ranking will facilitate data-driven decision-making and support the next step: roadmap development.

Next, you'll dive into creating a detailed roadmap based on the prioritized opportunities you’ve identified

I have used the scoring card in many ways!  it is a hugely valuable tool to be able to articulate how you came to a decision without a multi-page document.

Quick trick - try it with a small feature tweak and weight it against other improvements before you weigh big rocks!
